Capoeira trip to Brazil has been canceled
Unfortunately we have to announce the cancellation of the Brazil trip we were planning to have for July of this year. Due to this international crisis we are starting to notice a very low number of enrolment of people in all kinds of capoeira event. The capoeirando in Ilheus which normaly holds around 500 people this year had only 60! Considering that many of the participants of our event would be coming from USA, Europe and Asia (which are the most financially affected areas) and based on the response we have had up until now we think that canceling it is the best to to at the moment.
I apologise for the people that were already commited and want to tell you that if you are still planning to go ahead with your trip plans I will help you to connect with other events that will be happening in Brazil around that time.
On the other hand I am seriousely studing the possibility doing a small encounter at the California Brazil Camp in Cazadero this year and am already announcing an event that will take place in Ubatuba Brazil next year the weekend after carnival of 2010. That will be a music, dance and capoeira master camp. More info. Will be posted here in time.
Thank you for your interest and support.

Our method encourages people to realize that “limitation” is just a given concept based on unrealistic un-truthful comparisons of what is right or wrong. Instead we would rather present a concept where students experience different ways in which they can learn and perform a move according to their body type and physical capacity. We encourage students to challenge themselves to the maximum of their potential, respecting each individual’s pace with the awareness of any possible “limitations”. In capoeira, all training and movements can be modified to adjust
to your skill level. More importantly, we want to remind all students that you know your body better than anybody else. If there are any concerns you have about a movement that you think you cannot do due to physical limitations, fear of getting hurt, or anything related, please do not hesitate to inform your instructor. You will not be forced to do any movements that compromise your safety.
To preserve the tradition of capoeira, we maintain the terms and names of the capoeira moves in Brazilian Portuguese and one will often hear us speaking to each other and addressing to the students in Portuguese in order to facilitate the learning of the language to everyone. We also help in interpreting the songs to the capoeiristas
as well as making corrections on the pronunciation. It is our belief that the closer one remains to the roots the better he/she will understand and assimilate this art into their lives.
Additionally, we teach students different activities related to capoeira such as Maculelê (warrior stick fight dance), Samba de Roda (traditional folkloric samba style), Puxada de Rede (fisherman’s dance), and many other activities related to the life of capoeiristas in Brazil. In our classes we all help to teach and we know that we learn from everybody even from the newest beginner.
Our group has become an extended family to many of us. We strive to understand that our similarities are greater than our differences. We teach students to respect the traditions of capoeira and to understand the hierarchy of the art. In our academy, STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED TO MAKE MISTAKES but they are also taught not to lose the laughter for the Brazilian way of doing capoeira involves lots of sense of humor including being playful and comical. Mocking and making a fool of ourselves are always done in a healthy atmosphere of support.

Respect others (don’t be selfish, avoid judging, don’t compare, don’t undermine or underestimate others, be forgiving).
- Punctuality & Promptness: Be on time (or perhaps before the class/workshop/event starts) Arriving to class earlier will help in many ways such as changing to training gear, paying for the classes, read new announcements, stretch, tune in to the mode of that day at the academy or connect with the instructors or students. Help in anyway needed if requested or if the common sense tells you to do so.
- Cleanliness: Be clean and considerate (make sure to were clean capoeira attire, always clip your toe nails, cover any cuts or open wounds with appropriate first aids dressings), maintain always-good personal hygiene. Never were street shoes in the academy. Never train with unwashed t-shirts from prior trainings. If you have any out of the norm condition that promotes strong body odors such as: (strong sweat, bad breath due to digestive issues, “chulé” smelly feet) take appropriate measures to minimize or solve it. Otherwise you may get a nick-name from it.
- Assiduousness: Be assiduous, have assiduity, be dependable, consistent, reliable, coherent, trustworthy, responsible, assertive and liable. Set good example and be diligent.
- Consciousness: Welcome newcomers and help beginners when needed. Be conscious, courteous and thoughtful. In our group everyone can help anyone. Potentially the hierarchy or belt ranking will be a determining factor to who needs more or less help. Remember that at any Mandinga school you are allowed to do a mistake! Motivate and encourage yourself and others to perceive improvement and change what needed in order to promote such improvement and growth and maintain the standards of our capoeira lineage.
- Informative: Communicate all that is necessary to the person in charge. Announce the instructor in class if you need to leave the room or leave the class even if the official class time has passed. Advise any or all our teachers of any physical limitations or personal concerns that you may have in regards to the activities you are requested to perform.
- Discipline: Have the capacity to be organized and consistent in order to achieve a particular goal and to pursue towards it with method, criteria and perseverance. Bare in mind some of the basic things a student needs to have in order to obtain a successful learning.
• Willingness (the spontaneous desire one has to learn, and the capacity to overcome the obstacles found through out the learning process).
• Focus (how much a person can concentrate and try to understand the teaching).
• Dedication (how much, how intense and how frequent one practices regardless of the barriers or difficulties found in their way).
• Persistence (how long one have been and will be involved in training).
• Patience (person’s capacity to accept their own learning pace and let go of the frustrations and expectations, accepting who they are and trusting the process).
• Grounded (to have ground-ness to set realistic goals, be cohesive and willing to re-set the goals if needed). - Fundamentals: Train the fundamentals and keep in mind the TCRR rule (Teach, Correct, Remind and Reinforce). Teach and Correct the beginners, Remind and Reinforce the intermediates and advanced students. Persist in practicing the basic.
- Care-ness: Take good care of yourself (rest well, eat well, give yourself treats), have fun and create joyful experiences. Know that you are capable of what you want as long as you realy want what you are capable.
- Share-ness: (share your happiness, your knowledge, your skills and your positive experiences with anyone or everyone) {share your frustrations, your concerns and your fears with the people you feel comfortable}.

About Capoeira
Capoeira — Originating in Brazil in the 1600s, Capoeira is the only indigenous American martial art, it was developed by African slaves in Brazil. Capoeira began to take form amongst the community of slaves that worked on the sugar cane plantations, the docks and various other slave works. It became a strong weapon in the life and death struggle against their oppressors. When the owners of the sugar cane fields realized the power of capoeira, they began to punish those who practiced it, sometimes with death. Capoeiristas learned to camouflage the forbidden fight with singing and clapping as though it were simply entertainment. The fight was disguised behind the dance – a dance that could be as graceful as a panther and as treacherous as a snake. Mestre Bimba, with his good will and love of the art was able to take capoeira from being forbidden by law and transformed it into Brazil’s national sport. He along with Mestre Pastinha was the first to open schools and the capoeira tree grew, spreading its branches across the world.Capoeira is an art form and self-defense; with strong aerobic and dance elements. It is a harmony of forces that gives you power, flexibilty, endurance and self-discovery. Capoeira balances the body, soul and mind. It is a graceful, exciting art form that teaches you to be alert. The art keeps its strong traditions and enables you to break through limits, revitalizing you for everyday life.
Maculelê — (Pronounced: mah-koo-leh-LEH) An Afro Brazilian dance where dancers gather in a roda (circle) and dance by rhythmically striking grimas (sticks) together and integrating athletic movements. Music is played atabaques (the big drums we are using) and performers sing call and response songs. Costumes consist of grass skirts, paint on the skin and little else.
Batucada — A style of samba which is an African influenced Brazilian percussive style. It is considered by some to be the epitome of the percussive ensemble. Batucada is characterized by its repetitive style and fast pace.

About Our Group
Everything started at the end of the year 2005: a few capoeiristas started to meet on the weekends in Luxun Park, weather permitting. In the 3 years since then what was once spontaneous training in the park between a few enthusiasts has grown into a proper capoeira group, which has on several occasions invited instructors from all over the world to come and teach. The person responsible for keeping capoeira alive in Shanghai has been Diego “Guerreiro”: in October 2007 he invited Mestre Marcelo to come to Shanghai for a workshop, and Capoeira Shanghai became part of Mestre’s international group, Capoeira Mandinga. Contra Mestre Cipo’, Contra Mestre Batatinha and Instrutor Marcão have all taught in Shanghai, contributing greatly to the development of capoeira here, and helping our students prepare for this event – The First Annual Batizado of Capoeira Mandinga Shanghai!
